Dressing Your Baby Through the Seasons

January 20, 2023

Small babies warm up and cool down quickly, so it's up to you to help. That sounds harder than it is.

How to check

Feel the back of your baby's neck. Warm and dry is good. Sweaty means too warm, so take a layer off. Cold hands and feet are normal and don't tell you much.

Summer

Thin, loose clothes, a sunhat and plenty of shade. Offer feeds more often when it's hot. Ask your health visitor what they advise about sun protection for young babies.

Spring and autumn

Layers work best: a vest, something on top and a cardigan you can take off. The weather changes quickly, so bring an extra layer.

Winter

A hat outside, warm socks or booties and a warm suit. Take the outer layers off when you go inside, even for a quick stop, so your baby doesn't get too warm.

In a baby carrier

Your body warms your baby, and the carrier counts as a layer. So dress your baby one layer lighter than you would in the pram. In winter, zip your coat over both of you or use a cover, and keep their face free. Check their neck now and then, especially when you go from the cold into a warm shop.

The Solace Carrier is made from natural, breathable fabrics, so you can use it all year round.
